Road Safety: A Global Crisis

Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 years globally. An estimated 181,453 children under the age of 19 lose their lives every year due to road traffic injuries, with more than 90% of these fatalities occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These are not isolated incidents, but preventable tragedies with devastating social and economic consequences for families and communities. At CG RSA FLASH GATE, we recognize the urgency of this crisis, and we're committed to taking action. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable due to their unique developmental and behavioral characteristics. Younger children are more often victims as pedestrians or passengers, while older adolescents are increasingly exposed as cyclists, motorcyclists, and novice drivers. Yet most roads are not built with their needs in mind, and critical safety measures like child restraints, speed reduction near schools, and safe pedestrian infrastructure remain under-implemented."

“Road Safety” is at the heart of our organization. We focus on promoting safe road practices and reducing road crashes and fatalities. This encompasses various aspects, including education and awareness, advocacy and policy reform, community engagement and participation, and research and knowledge sharing.

Staying Alert

The word “Alert” represents our proactive approach to road safety. It symbolizes vigilance, promptness, and preparedness in responding to road safety concerns. We emphasize the importance of being alert and aware while driving or using the roads.

Swift Response with Flash Gate

“Flash Gate” refers to our swift and effective response to road safety emergencies. It suggests a gateway or portal for rapid intervention and assistance. The idea of flashing lights incorporates urgency, attention, and prompt action.

Background and Inspiration Behind the Establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE

The establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE was inspired mainly by two key factors, which drove the founder’s personal commitment to road safety.

First Key Factor: Alarming Road Fatality Statistics

The alarming road fatality statistics in South Africa, which were persistently high in the years leading up to 2018, were a major inspiration for the establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE. Although the organisation was founded in 2018, the problem of road fatalities existed long before. In fact, a personal tragedy struck the founder’s family when a loved one was severely injured in a road crash, highlighting the devastating impact of road accidents. The 2018 statistics, however, serve as a benchmark to measure the impact and contribution of CG RSA FLASH GATE. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the National Department of Transport, in 2018, South Africa recorded 12,921 fatalities on its roads. This includes 5,083 pedestrian fatalities and 3,583 driver fatalities. Notably, children between 0-14 years old accounted for 10.2% of fatalities, while the 25-39 age group accounted for 40.9% of fatalities.

Coming To The Second Key Factor: Economic Impact of Road Crashes

The second key factor that inspired the establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE is the significant economic burden of road crashes in South Africa. Road crashes not only claim lives but also have a profound impact on the country’s economic growth. The loss of young people, including children between 0-14 years old and young adults between 25-39 years old, who are the future leaders, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators of the country, is particularly devastating. This loss affects the nation’s human capital, leading to a reduction in the workforce and a strain on the economy. The economic impact of road crashes is further exacerbated by the costs of medical care, emergency services, and damage to property.

The founder’s personal commitment to road safety is deeply rooted in their own experience of losing loved ones and close friends to road crashes. This personal tragedy has fuelled a passion for road safety, driving the mission to prevent similar tragedies and promote safer roads. Globally, Africa has the highest road traffic fatality rates, with an estimated 250 people dying every hour on African roads. In South Africa, road crashes claim thousands of lives each year, with children and young people being disproportionately affected. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), South Africa has one of the highest rates of road traffic fatalities in the world, with over 14,000 people killed on its roads annually. The impact of road crashes goes beyond the immediate loss of life, causing emotional trauma, economic hardship, and social disruption to families and communities. It is in response to this crisis that CG RSA FLASH GATE has embarked on a new chapter of evolution, expansion, and rebranding their name, to expand it’s scope and long term vision, driven by our commitment to creating a safer environment for all road users and reducing the burden of road crashes on our communities. Despite operating with limited resources and facing significant funding challenges since its inception in 2018, our organization remains committed to its long-term goals and vision, leveraging partnerships, stakeholder support, and internal resources to drive meaningful change and transcend the limitations imposed by financial constraints.

Through strategic collaborations with government agencies, private sector entities, and civil society organizations, we’ve driven meaningful change to reduce the burden of road crashes on our communities. As we evolve into our new identity, it embodies our commitment to creating safer roads in South Africa and ultimately across Africa.

The Launching Of Our New Identity And Rebranding: 

Effective October 31st, 2025, our new brand identity will be launched, aligning with our 7-year anniversary, and guided by our updated slogan, “Driving Safer Nations” which reflects our broadened focus on pan African road safety, uniting communities and stakeholders towards a shared vision of a safer transportation future.

Our revised vision statement reflects our commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for all road users across the African continent. Our mission statement has been refined to emphasize our dedication to promoting safe driving practices, advocating for policy change, and collaborating with stakeholders to reduce the burden of road crashes. Our new slogan, “Driving Safer Nations” encapsulates our passion and purpose.
