We have our headquarters in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal Province, and a strategic satellite office in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province.

CG RSA FLASH GATE: Description And Commitment

CG RSA FLASH GATE is a road safety-dedicated NGO and specialist in decentralizing and mobilizing proactive road safety education and advocacy initiatives across South Africa. Driven by a commitment to valuing human life, advocating for zero tolerance for road carnage, and driving socio-economic growth, we foster a culture of shared responsibility for road safety among all road users. Through strategic partnerships and adaptive collaborations with government transport agencies, private sector entities, and other stakeholders, we facilitate active prevention measures and enhance reactive response capabilities. We leverage innovative solutions and targeted road safety initiatives to advance safe mobility and efficient traffic flow.

Significance Behind the Name of CG RSA FLASH GATE

The name CG RSA FLASH GATE holds deep meaning and significance. “CG” stands for Community Growth, reflecting our commitment to promoting the well-being and prosperity of communities through road safety initiatives.

Road Safety: Our Primary Focus

“Road Safety” is at the heart of our organization. We focus on promoting safe road practices and reducing road crashes and fatalities. This encompasses various aspects, including education and awareness, advocacy and policy reform, community engagement and participation, and research and knowledge sharing.

Staying Alert

The word “Alert” represents our proactive approach to road safety. It symbolizes vigilance, promptness, and preparedness in responding to road safety concerns. We emphasize the importance of being alert and aware while driving or using the roads.

Swift Response with Flash Gate

“Flash Gate” refers to our swift and effective response to road safety emergencies. It suggests a gateway or portal for rapid intervention and assistance. The idea of flashing lights incorporates urgency, attention, and prompt action.

CG RSA FLASH GATE, Slogan: Road Traffic Safety Assured

Our slogan, “Road Traffic Safety Assured,” reinforces our mission and objectives. It conveys confidence and reliability in our efforts to promote road safety. The word “Assured” emphasizes our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all road users.

Background and Inspiration Behind the Establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE

The establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE was inspired mainly by two key factors, which drove the founder’s personal commitment to road safety.

First Key Factor: Alarming Road Fatality Statistics

The alarming road fatality statistics in South Africa, which were persistently high in the years leading up to 2018, were a major inspiration for the establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE. Although the organisation was founded in 2018, the problem of road fatalities existed long before. In fact, a personal tragedy struck the founder’s family when a loved one was severely injured in a road crash, highlighting the devastating impact of road accidents. The 2018 statistics, however, serve as a benchmark to measure the impact and contribution of CG RSA FLASH GATE. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the National Department of Transport, in 2018, South Africa recorded 12,921 fatalities on its roads. This includes 5,083 pedestrian fatalities and 3,583 driver fatalities. Notably, children between 0-14 years old accounted for 10.2% of fatalities, while the 25-39 age group accounted for 40.9% of fatalities.

Coming To The Second Key Factor: Economic Impact of Road Crashes

The second key factor that inspired the establishment of CG RSA FLASH GATE is the significant economic burden of road crashes in South Africa. Road crashes not only claim lives but also have a profound impact on the country’s economic growth. The loss of young people, including children between 0-14 years old and young adults between 25-39 years old, who are the future leaders, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators of the country, is particularly devastating. This loss affects the nation’s human capital, leading to a reduction in the workforce and a strain on the economy. The economic impact of road crashes is further exacerbated by the costs of medical care, emergency services, and damage to property.

The Founder’s Personal Commitment to Road Safety

The founder’s personal commitment to road safety is deeply rooted in their own experience of losing loved ones and close friends to road crashes. This personal tragedy has fuelled a passion for road safety, driving the mission to prevent similar tragedies and promote safer roads. By addressing the alarming road fatality statistics and the significant economic burden of road crashes, CG RSA FLASH GATE aims to make a meaningful contribution to reducing the devastating impact of road accidents on families, communities, and the South African economy.

The Vision of CG RSA FLASH GATE

A South Africa free from the tragedy of road crashes and fatalities, with zero tolerance for road carnage. Where road safety is a shared responsibility, fostering a culture of mutual respect amongst all road users, valuing human life, advancing safe mobility, contributing to safe and efficient traffic flow, and driving socio-economic growth.

The Mission Of CG RSA FLASH GATE

To decentralize and mobilize proactive road safety education, awareness, and advocacy initiatives across South Africa, through strategic and adaptive collaboration efforts that drive active prevention measures and reactive response capabilities, leveraging targeted road safety advocacy initiatives, innovative solutions, and research. We advocate for zero tolerance for road carnage, fostering community engagement, driving socio-economic growth, and cultivating a culture of road safety and shared responsibility among all road users.

Complementary Vision and Mission Statement

Our vision and mission are anchored in a strategic approach that prioritizes proactive road safety education, awareness, and advocacy. By harnessing technology, fostering adaptive partnerships with government agencies, private sector entities, and community-based organizations, together can we drive innovation, efficient traffic flow, and a culture that values human life, enabling South Africa's socio-economic growth.

CG RSA FLASH GATE’s Call to the South African Government for Urgent Intervention on the Road Safety Crisis

Building on our expertise as specialists in decentralising and mobilising proactive road safety education, awareness, and advocacy initiatives in our communities, through our adaptive strategic approach of active prevention and reactive response to road crashes, fatalities, injuries, and other road safety concerns that impact our communities, we are compelled to intensify our efforts. Leveraging our experience since inception in 2018, particularly our recent observations and research-based findings from hosting road safety activations and initiatives, we are issuing a call to action. We invite potential sponsors, partners, and stakeholders to collaborate with us in enhancing road safety nationwide. By supporting our efforts, we can collectively make a meaningful impact and save lives on South African roads

CG RSA FLASH GATE: Key Observations and Challenges

Our experience has shown that while we have made progress in promoting road safety through collaborations with government stakeholders, a significant challenge remains: consistency. Current efforts often involve sporadic campaigns that lack sustained engagement throughout the year. This inconsistency undermines the impact of our initiatives, as people require ongoing education and engagement to adopt and maintain safe road practices. To address this, we recommend a more sustained and coordinated approach to road safety initiatives.

CG RSA FLASH GATE Cries for Intervention: A Call to Government, Transport Stakeholders, and Private Sector Entities for Funding to Enhance Road Safety in South Africa

At CG RSA FLASH GATE, we respectfully pledge to the Government of South Africa, specifically the Minister of Transport, and extend our call to action to all relevant stakeholders, including transport-related agencies, private sector entities, and other interested parties, to collaborate with us in supporting and enhancing our road safety initiatives nationwide. We urge the private sector, particularly companies in the transportation and logistics sector, to partner with us in promoting road safety awareness and best practices. We believe that with the influence and support of the Minister of Transport and the RTMC, we can make a significant impact in reducing road crashes and saving lives.

Potential Areas for Collaboration

Some potential areas for collaboration between private companies and NGOs include:

• Road Safety Awareness Campaigns: Private companies can support NGOs in conducting road safety awareness campaigns, targeting drivers, pedestrians, and other road users.

• Refresher Courses: NGOs can provide refresher courses on road signs and rules for drivers and employees of private companies.

A Stark Reminder: The Human Cost of Road Accidents in South Africa. Please be advised the following images may be disturbing.

The Lasting Impact Of Road Accidents

We share these images not to sensationalize, but to humanize the urgent need for road safety awareness and reform across South Africa. The absence of those lost their lives, in road accidents leaves an unfillable void, impacting families, communities, and our nation's future.

Honoring the Lives Lost

The lives lost are not just statistics; they are parents, providers, and guardians who left behind loved ones. They are young scholars, full of promise and ambition, whose dreams will never be realized. Medical professionals, healers, and caregivers who could have saved countless lives. Engineers, builders, and innovators who could have shaped our nation's future. Community leaders, champions of change who inspired others.
